Meghan O’Donnell is just one example of how employer involvement can be a vital resource for both students and industry. A college recruiting specialist with Kreischer-Miller, O’Donnell has been a frequent visitor to campus for annual the Zeigler Institute for Professional Development (ZIPD) Conference and Accounting & Financial Services Career Expo, as well as a speaker for the student Accounting Association.
“We have several amazing alumni working in our office, many of whom had very positive recruiting experiences,” said O’Donnel. “Our team values its strong relationship with Commonwealth University [and] building and maintaining relationships with students, professors, and other faculty has been a key part of that success.”
O’Donnel says that Commonwealth students consistently make an impression on Kreischer-Miller representatives by not only attending these Professional U events professionally dressed, but also actively engaging with the employer and alumni professionals who volunteer.
“Any opportunity we get to spend time with students is always meaningful and enjoyable,” explained O’Donnel. “The students we meet are consistently kind, engaged, and genuinely curious about the accounting profession. I am always impressed by how comfortable the students are with carrying conversations with professionals.”
O’Donnel says she would strongly encourage alumni and other employers to get involved in mentoring and recruiting Commonwealth students.
“The students are genuinely appreciative of the time professionals take to engage with them,” concluded O’Donnel. “Volunteering and recruiting also gives employers the opportunity to get creative and connect with students in ways that go beyond traditional career fairs.”
