Bonded by More than Friendship
When Thomas “Tom” Mulderig ’80 and Francis “Frank” Burgess ’81 met in 1977 at Bloomsburg State College, they never knew that their friendship would result in a life-saving operation. Tom and Frank met while pledging the Beta Sigma Delta fraternity and kept in touch over the years by vacationing with their families at Knoebel’s Grove, golfing, and attending each other’s family events.
In recent years, Tom’s health declined, and he needed a kidney transplant. Frank immediately volunteered and started the testing process. While not all donors can directly donate to their recipient, Frank was a perfect match.
Both have completely recovered and attended the annual Beta Sigma Delta Golf outing in May 2026. This golf outing, founded in 1991 by Jeffrey Drumheller ’80, Mulderig, Burgess, and Robert Flick ’79, continues today and supports two annual scholarships for Bloomsburg students.
For more information about kidney donation, contact the National Kidney Foundation.
