The Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg University-Community Orchestra will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a concert on Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.
The program will include a performance of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, titled “From the New World.” The popular symphony was written by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák in 1893, while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895, and premiered in New York City in December 1893.
The concert will also include Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” a variation on “When Jonny Comes Marching Home,” a symphonic portrait of Irving Berlin, and Aaron Copland’s “John Henry,” which musically tells the story of the “steel-driving man.”
The orchestra is directed by Dr. David Tedford. Senior music major Alex Eby will guest conduct “John Henry” and a composition by student Jack Curran, “How to Start a War With a Giant.”
