Health Physicists and Radiation Protection professionals come from a variety of backgrounds including physics, biology, environmental science, and radiologic technology. Any student can obtain this certificate, regardless of major. This certificate provides a solid foundation in health physics and radiation protection to address critical needs in research, industry, and healthcare.

Course Modality Notice
The RASC 410 laboratory course offered exclusively in-person. All other courses in the program offer flexible delivery options and may be offered in person, blended, or via remote synchronous formats, depending on student location.

Radiation Protection Certificate Requirements

  • 41 credits required for certificate completion
  • Students should meet with their academic advisor each semester and use Degree Works to monitor their individual progress toward completion of the certificate.

Certificate Requirements

  Certificate Progress: Enrolled students can review program requirements and track progress toward certificate completion using the university’s degree audit and advising tool, Degree Works.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of radiation protection (including time, distance, shielding, and ALARA) and apply them to minimize radiation exposure to patients, workers, and the public in clinical or occupational settings.
  2. Demonstrate competence in the accurate use of radiation detection and monitoring equipment to assess radiation levels, interpret dose measurements, and implement appropriate control measures that ensure compliance with regulatory dose limits.
  3. Articulate regulatory and professional responsibilities including radiation safety regulations, ethical responsibilities, and professional standards (e.g., OSHA, NRC/NCRP guidelines), demonstrating the ability to incorporate legal and ethical principles into safe work practices and documentation.
