National Guard Friendly
Hundreds of Pennsylvania National Guard students pursue their degree at Commonwealth University.
Based on our cooperative efforts with the PA Guard, to include the PNG Education Office, Recruiting Stations, and Readiness NCOs, Commonwealth University is positioned to maximize guard benefits and provide expert advice and support along the way.
Benefits and Support Services
The Army National Guard offers Federal Tuition Assistance which provides up to $250 per semester hour, up to $4,500 per year.
Commonwealth University’s competitive tuition rate allows Pennsylvania Army National Guard Soldiers to maximize their Education Assistance Program benefits, covering up to 100% of tuition costs!
Upon completion of Initial Active Duty Training, National Guard and Reserve servicemembers may be eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve, Chapter 1606. Check out our Military Educational Benefits & Certification page for eligibility and application info!
Student-veterans who are called to active duty (including deployment, mobilization, or enlistment) and need to withdraw from the university are encouraged to reach out to the Registrar’s Office at registrar@commonwealthu.edu as soon as they are able to begin the military withdrawal process. Activation orders will be required so that the Registrar’s Office can provide personalized guidance on the necessary steps.
Students will only be responsible for room and board charges for the portion of the term during which they lived in campus housing or used a meal plan prior to deployment. Because grades cannot be issued for incomplete terms, no grades — including a W for Withdrawal — will be recorded if deployment occurs before the conclusion of a term.
The Registrar’s Office will also offer support during the withdrawal process to ensure a smooth return to the university after activation. When ready to return, students may contact admissions@commonwealthu.edu to initiate readmission. They will be readmitted to the same academic program or, if that program is no longer available, to a comparable one, with their previous enrollment status, earned credits, and academic standing maintained unless they choose otherwise.
