Undergraduate Orientation

Welcome new Huskies, Bald Eagles & Mounties!

Commonwealth University is excited to welcome our new students and their supporters/families to Bloomsburg, Clearfield, Lock Haven, and Mansfield campuses for an exciting and informative orientation program. Below you will find information regarding our orientation programs, but first, let's talk about why it is so important.

We require that students attend orientation...yes, it is mandatory. It is mandatory because national research (as well as our own in-house research) shows that participation in orientation is one of the best ways to support college success. Every decision we make as an institution is driven by just that. What is best for our students.

Our Mission

Undergraduate Student Orientation is designed to provide you with the tools and information that will allow you to be successful at Commonwealth University. We strive for a smooth transition to your new academic and social experiences.

How Students Benefit from Orientation:

  • Gain a better understanding of academic expectations, policies, and procedures.
  • Feel prepared to transition to college life at CU
  • Make connections new and current students
  • Connect with faculty and staff
  • Become familiar with campus resources available to all students
  • Familiarize yourself with the people and places necessary for your success at CU
  • Gain a clearer understanding of their role as a college student
  • Strengthen the student - supporter/family - Commonwealth U partnership (in which we strongly believe)

Supporters/Parents/Guardians

We encourage supporters/parents/guardians (any person who provides support to the student) to attend orientation with their student. The beginning of a college experience is a very special and exciting time, not only for the student, but for supporters as well. The more that supporters understand about the college experience, the more helpful they can be to the student during their transition.

General Orientation Information

Congratulations on your enrollment at Commonwealth University. We can’t wait to welcome you into the family, and we are here to assist you as you begin your journey.

All new first year students are required to participate in New Student Orientation. During orientation, you will be connected to campus resources, you will begin to schedule courses, and you will have opportunities to meet faculty, staff, and other students. Orientation is designed to make your transition as smooth as possible and to help you be successful as you begin your college career.

We encourage supporters/parents/guardians (any person who provides support to the student) to attend orientation with their student, and we will have specific sessions designed just for them. The more that family members understand about the college experience, the more helpful they can be to the student during their transition.

Please review the pre-orientation check list and complete the required tasks.

We’re excited to have you continue your education here at Commonwealth University (CU). Whether you are transferring from a community college or a four-year institution, we know you’re not new to the college experience, but are new to CU. All transfer students are required to register and complete New Student Orientation. We at Commonwealth University recognize that transfer students have specific needs, and we plan our Orientation to provide you with important information that will aid you in your transition to a new institution. Prior to participating, be sure that the Admissions office has received your most recent official transcript. This will be most beneficial to the scheduling process.

While you won’t be joining us on campus at Commonwealth University, we are excited to have you as part of the CU family! Your experience will be different from our residential students, so we’ve put together a section of helpful information just for you.

  • Brightspace - where your important class information will be held
  • A Message from CU Faculty (Coming Soon)
  • A Message from Student Success (Coming Soon)
  • Online Modules - these are built for all students but will contain important information even for online students (Coming Soon)

Spring Start Students, are those who join our campuses for the first time in their collegiate careers in January. Our team will provide a more condensed version of Orientation. We will offer some virtual content, a live Zoom option, and in-person opportunities (typically the Sunday prior to the start of the Spring Semester). More information will be provided closer to Spring Semester through your admissions portal.

These modules are your final steps to being prepared for your academic and social success at Commonwealth University. They contain a review of some of the information you will have received during other orientation events, but most of the content is more in-depth and new. Additionally, these modules contain requirements from key areas across campus in one convenient location. Each Commonwealth U campus will have their own campus specific content as well as tracks based on the type of student you are (online only, new first time in college, or transfer student). Be sure to complete these, no later than the end of the second full week of the semester you enter.

Pre-Orientation Checklist

Commonwealth University requires a mathematics ability assessment to determine readiness for various courses. Students in particular majors are required to use the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning system. Other students may choose to use this system to better prepare for classes. The ALEKS placement system covers material from Basic Math through Pre-Calculus and will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. After the assessment, a targeted Prep and Learning Module is available for you to review and better understand this material. The Learning Modules will help you improve your placement and eventual course outcomes.
