The Special Education Program at CU-Bloomsburg held an EmpowerED to Teach event on campus, which hosted approximately 30 local high school students interested in education on Friday, Nov. 14.
Four local school districts were invited to attend, all of which have education-focused career and technical education pathways in their high schools: Berwick, Bloomsburg, Central Columbia, and Milton.
The event aligned with a 2024-2026 Developing Future Special Educators Attract-Prepare-Retain Grant awarded to Dr. Brooke Lylo, Dr. Robin Drogan, and Dr. Stephanie Gardner from the PA Department of Education. Commonwealth University was one of 76 schools across the state awarded the grant.
The EmpowerED to Teach event engaged high school students in a Q&A panel with current teacher candidates in their senior year pursuing Special Education PK-12/Early Childhood Education PK-4 dual certification, a strategy session focused on classroom management practices and applying them in role play activities, and a special virtual visit from one of the PA Teacher of the Year Finalists, Andrea Rutledge.
