The ASL minor prepares students to develop fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), understand Deaf Culture, and how to appropriately interact with the Deaf Community.

The minor in sign language will involve a developmental sequence of 15 credit hours in sign language courses and 3 credit hours in Deaf culture (totaling 18 credits). Students outside of the ASL/English Interpreting Program will have an opportunity to strengthen an additional skill that will make them more employable and acceptable for graduate programs.

Students may wish to major in an area of their interest and want to work with the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing population in that area. Examples could be psychology/sign language, nursing/sign language, and education/sign language. Students must receive advisement from the ASL/English Interpreting Program minor advisor with regard to course selections. Contact Dr. Bridget Klein with any questions.

  • Students should meet with their academic advisor each semester and use Degree Works to monitor their individual progress toward completion of the minor.

Minor Requirements

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to create a content centered conversation.
  2. Utilize vocabulary incorporating advanced grammar.
  3. Produce narrative stories that include appropriate body movements and grammar.
  4. Describe various aspects of the Deaf Culture, Deaf communities and the diversity within the communities.
  5. Assess outcomes and implications of systematic institutions and their impact on the psychological and sociological impact of Deaf individuals.
