Student Fee Definitions

At Commonwealth University, student success is our top priority. The Academic Enhancement fee is used for and allocated to expand academic excellence by supporting instructional operations (44%), equipment (29%), learning materials (15%), and academic facility upgrades (12%)to ensure you have everything you need to excel in and out of the classroom.

The Information Technology fee helps students access the latest emerging technology in the classroom (10%) and helps support Commonwealth University’s campus network infrastructure (4%) to enhance learning while ensuring students have cutting edge preparation for technological skills needed in their future careers. This fee also helps to fund leading academic software & subscriptions (66%) and certain skilled personnel who directly support network infrastructure and classroom technologies (19%).

At Commonwealth University, your education goes beyond academics. The Student Services fee supports many of the other unique aspects of campus life to help you make the most of your college experience.

  • Health, Counseling, and Well-being (Health and Wellness Fee): An important part of being a successful student is maintaining your physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. This fee includes access to Student Health Services and the Counseling Centers (85%), psychological and medical goods (4%) and wellness educational and preventive services (11%) offered by the Office of Student Well-being and Health Promotion.
  • Campus Recreation Fee: This fee supports the infrastructure, equipment, and facility operations of Commonwealth University Campus Recreation buildings, outdoor fields, and numerous recreational programs. The recreational facilities provide availability to industry leading fitness equipment, fitness studios, multi-purpose courts, indoor track, racquetball, climbing walls, and more. The primary mission of the department is to enhance the experience, retention and satisfaction of Commonwealth University through an extensive array of as wanted, impromptu, informal, intramural, club sport, outdoor, fitness/wellness and special event programs. The Campus Recreation fee provides access, encourages participation, and facilitates physical activity, socialization, and interconnectedness that supports overall, academic, social, and physical well-being. The fee collected is allocated to the direct costs associated with the effective management of campus-specific recreation facilities, equipment, and programming and efficient indirect and collective costs that span across one or more Commonwealth University campuses. Students who are living off campus and are enrolled in classes that are 100% online or off-campus are charged a reduced rate for the Student Services Fee that does not include access to the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on the Bloomsburg and Lock Haven campuses and the Kelchner Fitness Center (KFC) on the Mansfield campus. Students who are billed at the reduced rate can request access to the SRC or KFC by completing the Recreation Center Access Request form. The additional fee will be added to the student’s account balance in Banner.
  • Student Union Fee: This fee supports the infrastructure, equipment, and facility operations of Commonwealth University Student Union Buildings and are generally the largest indoor event sites on campus aside from athletic facilities. The buildings operate and are designed to be the central gathering and meeting place for students at times most convenient to them and often when administrative and academic buildings are not accessible. This is inclusive of the hosting of many student services and programs where cooperative cost sharing is conducted with the University Administration, including but not limited to student services administrative offices and work areas for special programs and services. Extensions of the cooperative cost sharing include cost recovery from non-student operations and users of the large and small reservable areas. The fee collected is allocated to the direct costs associated with the effective management of campus-specific student union facilities, equipment, and programming and efficient indirect and collective costs that span across one or more Commonwealth University campuses.
  • Student Success Fee: Going to college can be challenging. We make sure that you have access to all the resources you need to be workforce ready. Your success is our success. This fee is to support, maintain or enhance student academic support services, including areas such as Student Success Centers (35%), Academic Advising (27%), Tutorial Services (25%) and Learning Communities (13%). The fee will be collected each semester and the amount assessed is based upon the number of enrolled credits.
  • Student Transportation Fee: The Student Transportation fee helps maintain a fleet of safe and reliable campus vehicles to provide convenient transportation for all students throughout the academic year and includes the shuttle buses to transport you in and around your campus and surrounding community. The fee is allocated 100% to maintenance, fuel, insurance and vehicle replacement costs.

The Student Activity fee supports programmatic, cultural, and agreed upon university budgetary policy obligations including 36.4% of revenue collected to augment intercollegiate athletics program, 4.3% to enhance the department of music’s outreach and impact, student clubs and organizations funding, student government operations, and traditional student activities engagement that facilitates socialization and belonging. These funds support the arts, lectures, special speakers, and diversity programs offered to the campus community. Student activity funds underwrite student requested and approved services that include initiatives like late-night shuttle service for students to and from the town on the weekend, financial support to student radio station (WHSK), and student creative and informational multimedia outlets and products. It is also utilized to maintain appropriate licensing and rights for the dissemination and performance of music, songs, and movies at the University. The fee collected is allocated to the direct costs associated with the effective management of campus-specific student union facilities, equipment, and programming.

The Student Services and Student Activity Fees are mandatory fees charged to all students.

We recognize that some students, due to the nature of their academic program or curriculum, may not reside near campus and may have limited access to on-campus services. 

Students who believe they meet this criteria may submit an appeal for a waiver of campus-based fees for the current semester by completing the appeal form linked below. Appeals are reviewed every two weeks by a committee. Please note that approvals are granted only in limited circumstances, and the committee’s decisions are final.

Course & Program Fee Definitions

The Clinical Key Fee supports the online subscription for textbooks and other sources (100%).

The clinical fee provides students in the Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D) with access to an on-campus Hearing Clinic where they learn clinical management and acquire skills and professional competency under the direct supervision of Clinical Supervisors who are American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified and licensed by the State of Pennsylvania Board of Examiners in Audiology. 100% of the fee will cover the operational expenses associated with the on-campus Hearing Clinic. The on-campus Clinic is immensely critical to ensure the Au.D. students are acquiring the knowledge required to meet the standards for the program's CAA accreditation and for the students' ASHA certification.

The Graduate Nursing Clinical Fee supports the clinical education requirements by the accrediting agencies for the Nurse Practitioner and Nursing Anesthesia programs (100%).

The clinical fee provides students in the M.S. Speech Language Pathology program with access to an on-campus Speech Clinic where they learn clinical management and acquire skills and professional competency under the direct supervision of Clinical Supervisors who are American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified and licensed by the State of Pennsylvania Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology.  100% of the fee will go toward covering operational expenses associated with the on-campus speech clinic. The on-campus clinic is immensely critical to ensure the M.S. SLP students are able to successfully complete the 400 hours of supervised clinical experience for certification in Speech-Language Pathology.
