Psychology Teaching Assistants
PSYC 441: Theory and Practice of Academic Psychology explores pedagogical techniques that are supported as effective for teaching psychology in the college classroom. The course also focuses on career development, preparation for graduate school, and professional responsibilities in academia. As an experiential component, students in the class serve as teaching assistants for the mass-enrollment PSYC 100: Introduction to Psychology course. In this role, they practice presenting course content, plan and facilitate review sessions, and hold a weekly student consultation hour to support the Intro Psych students' success.

Career Goal: A role in the helping profession
My advice to any student beginning at CU-Bloomsburg is that it's important to ask for help and not be afraid to take advantage of the resources around you. College can feel overwhelming at different times, but especially at first. Getting involved, meeting new people, and contacting professors when you need help can make the experience much more enjoyable and less overwhelming.

My favorite thing about CU-Bloomsburg is the number of clubs and extracurriculars you can join. I am in the Psychology club, Social Work club, and Bloom Earth. The Social Work and Psychology clubs help me get more involved with my major and have allowed me to meet other people of all ages on campus. Bloom Earth is a fun club; we go on hikes, walks, and clean up the community.

My favorite thing about CU-Bloomsburg is how beautiful the campus is, especially how it changes throughout the seasons. I think it looks the prettiest during fall, but I also love seeing students playing in the snow in the winter and laying in the sun on the quad during the spring.

Something I love about being a psychology major is being able to broadan my understanding of other people. Learning about the complexity of human development and the various influences on an individual allows me to take a broader perspective when trying to understand the motivation for others.

Career Goal: Certified Child Life Specialist
I love the CU-Bloomsburg campus and the surrounding downtown area. I enjoy that CU-Bloomsburg is large enough to be able to meet new people, but you will often run into a familiar face, which makes it feel like home. I was raised in a large family (5 younger siblings) and our family fostered many children in need of unique medical care. This motivated my interest in pursing a degree in psychology and a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist.

Career Goal: Applied Behavior Analysis
My career interest focuses on children and behavioral therapy. I've been working in childcare for a few years and I love working with kids! Helping them manage their emotions is something I genuinely enjoy. I hope to build a career in behavioral therapy where I can support children's emotional development and make a positive difference in their life.

My biggest piece of advice for a beginning student is to take advantage of the resources here on campus if you feel stuck with classwork. Most professors are willing to make concepts as clear as possible so you can succeed, even if it takes a few tries. Learning is a marathon, not a sprint, so trying to brute force your way into understanding a topic instead of just asking for help will leave you confused and frustrated.

Major: Psychology
Minor: Criminal Justice
Hometown: Glenolden, PA
Career Goal: Child Psychologist
What I like most about CU-Bloomsburg is the campus, and it's one of the main reasons I chose this school. I've always found the human mind to be fascinating. I absolutely love studying human behavior and I feel like my time spent in this major has helped me understand other people much better and helped me to be a better person in general. Up until recently I had a very individualistic mindset, and as possibly the most social species on the planet, I think that mindset is very detrimental. These classes have really helped me break out of that mindset, and I'm hoping that throughout the rest of my life I can use what I have learned here to help others who may think the same way I used to.

My favorite thing about CU-Bloomsburg is the atmosphere. There are a lot of different opportunities for you to find a new hobby or club and involvement can be a lot of fun. There are many ways to meet people here and make new friends, so do not be afraid to put yourself out there. My advice to new students would be to take advantage of all the opportunities you can at college. This is a place where there are so many people who want to give you help if you need it, you just hav to be willing to ask.
Anna Vaughn
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Ardmore, PA
Career Goal: Industrial Organizational Psychology
My favorite thing about CU-Bloomsburg are my fellow students and professors because they are always willing to help when you need it. I also love how walkable the campus and town are, so get outside and explore! What motivates me most is knowing that much of our future time will be spent in the workplace, and I believe it should be a happy, healthy, and rewarding experience rather than just an everyday obligation. I love being a psychology major because the field is so open and offers many different opportunities. My advice is to keep an open mind and take advantage of the opportunities around you!

One piece of advice I would give to a new student at CU-Bloomsburg, is to say yes to as much as you can and be kind and friendly to everyone. As a student-athlete on the volleyball team, I would also say that staying organized and creating a system of writing things down helps keep you on track. Taking notes by hand and writing my "to-do list" in a planner with my schedule has saved me many times. My favorite thing about being a student at CU-Bloomsburg are the rolling hills of trees around the beautiful campus and the family I have found in the girls on my team. I love psychology because it is applicable to everyday life and expands into every other field of study as well.
