This minor prepares students with foundational special education knowledge. While this is not a certification program, the courses align with the PDE competencies for special education and provides content focused on identification, assessment, and instruction for students with exceptionalities. Field based experiences are embedded within several of the courses.

Special Education Minor Requirements

  • 18 credits required for minor completion
  • Students should meet with their academic advisor each semester and use Degree Works to monitor their individual progress toward completion of the minor.

Minor Requirements

PDE Guidelines for Special Education PK-12 outline competencies as follows:

  1. Describe the foundations of special education.
  2. Develop the academic and functional performance of students with disabilities.
  3. Identify individual learning differences and intervene appropriately.
  4. Develop the cognitive abilities of diverse learners within a standards aligned system.
  5. Provide specially designed instruction to all students.
