Responsibilities
The graduate assistant for Peer Tutoring assists the Director of the Learning Center in all duties related to the implementation of peer support services including recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of undergraduate office staff and peer leaders. Collection and synthesis of assessment data is another substantial role of this position.

Requirements
• Final undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Ability to work in an environment with minimal supervision
• A strong ability to multitask and effectively communicate with employees as well as clients
• Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access etc.) and ability to adapt to new technology
• Preferred: Experience working in an area of academic support- tutoring, study groups, etc.

Responsibilities
The Graduate Assistant (GA) serving in this position will provide support and emerging expertise through supervision and collaboration to the College of Arts, Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences Dean and Associate Dean Offices with the embedded Office of Teacher Preparation, Clinical Practice, and Certification. The GA will contribute to the operations of the college in the following areas: academic affairs, accreditations, and accountability, functionality of the unit’s quality assurance system (assessment, data reporting, data analysis, and continuous improvement of academic programs, including assisting with CAHESS data collection and reporting requirements, as the Associate Dean has oversight of CAHESS’s assessment system) using Watermark and other platforms, assisting with planning and running reports for administrators, department chairs and faculty of field and clinical placements, teacher candidate performance data, including content knowledge, dispositions, inclusive evidence-based pedagogies, culturally responsive pedagogies, and professional ethics, and supporting CAHESS teams working with advisory groups and PK-12 districts and school outreach where appropriate, the unit’s academic schedule is supervised by the Associate Dean, and having selective exposure and access to supporting the unit’s governance structures, and learning about higher education through serving as a GA in the Dean’s and Associate Dean Offices. The GA will also have opportunities to be mentored by administrators and co-directors, strategic planning and change management, team building skills, and further development of interpersonal skills and collaboration and collegiality in higher education in an academic unit across CAHESS. The GA will contribute to the college’s demonstrated understanding and advocacy in higher education for the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion within faculty, staff, and student demographics and having access to community and PK-12 district and school partners through various authentic, focused, and structured experiences, and in working with teams in the Dean and Associate Dean Offices.

Lock Haven Positions

The HOPE Center (Haven Outreach Programs for Empowerment) exists to support, empower, and enlighten all CU-Lock Haven students about issues of sex, gender, sexual violence, personal safety and health, social justice and educational equity.

Graduate Assistant Job Description:

  • Assist DEIB staff in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of HOPE Center signature programs that engage, empower, and educate the CU campus community
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive HOPE Center Outreach initiatives (including resource tabling/fairs, social media campaigns, HOPE 101 presentations, etc.)
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate educational workshops regarding gender equity, gender diversity, and sexual violence/misconduct
  • Assist with departmental assessment and data collection/tracking
  • Handle general office tasks and responsibilities related to daily operations
  • Assist with training and development of student leaders (student staff and student ambassadors)
  • Build meaningful relationships and collaborations with campus and community partners
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons of the HOPE Center
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Have a working knowledge of women’s issues, gender equity, and sexual violence topics and have a passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice
  • Have a professional and educational interest in Higher Education, Women’s Studies, Social Work, or a related field
  • Ability to facilitate interactive and engaging programs, events, and workshops for students, faculty, and staff

Resources

  • Graduate Assistantships are open to all regularly admitted students pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree. There are a varying number of assistantships available with each graduate program and in particular departments/offices across the University. Positions are awarded by the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research upon the recommendation of the Graduate Program Coordinators or GA supervisors.
  • Students are granted assistantships for one semester at a time. The appointment and continuation of an assistantship will depend upon good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 prior to appointment and in each semester of appointment), favorable evaluation by the faculty supervising the assistantship and recommendation of the Graduate Program Coordinator. Graduate students who have an assistantship in one program/office are not eligible for an assistantship in a second program/office.
  • CU assistantships are half-time (20 hours per week), quarter-time (10 hours per week), or eighth-time (5 hours per week). Students are required to work 15 weeks in the Fall and Spring semesters, and 12 weeks in the Summer semester. Eighth-time and quarter-time assistants must carry a minimum of nine (9) credits of graduate coursework and half time GA’s are required to carry a minimum of six (6). Both quarter and half-time assistantships provide a six (6) credit tuition waiver per semester and eighth-time assistantships provide a three (3) credit tuition waiver [non PA residents pay out-of-state tuition and fees]. The waiver does not include undergraduate prerequisite courses, activity fees, health fees, student union fees, recreational fees, or any other charges incurred.

Graduate assistants also receive a generous stipend and the opportunity to take graduate-level courses to continue developing professionally.
